During certain times of the year in some power markets, the net loadthe difference between electricity dema nd and the power supplied by non-dispatchable wind and solar facilitiescan surge by many gigawatts between the early afternoon and early evening. Nuclear power plants were never designed to handle such swings.The solution that is usually proposed to address such challenges is energy storage. Wind and photovoltaic (PV) systems produce electricity and thus couple well to technologies that store work, such as batteries or pumped hydropower. Concentrated solar plants have been designed to store thermal energy so as to produce power after sundown, but heat storage should also be of interest to operators of nuclear power plants. With policy goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions creating incentives to bring online as much stellvertreter s olar and wind power as possible, coupling nuclear power and heat storage is a way for nuclear plants to change from primarily base-load providers of electricity to providing variable electricity for the grid and ultimately becoming buyers and sellers of electricity.Adding heat storage to light-water reactors is the enabling technology for a carbon-free electricity industry based on solar, wind, and nuclear power. The first large-scale heat storage system for electricity production was the Charlottenburg Power Station steam accumulators built in Berlin in 1929. The accumulator system was comprised of 16 tanks, each 4.3 meters in diameter and 20 meters high, that were die nstgradd with steam from a coal boiler at times of low electricity demand. During high demand, the steam released by the accumulators drove a turbine with a peak electricity output of 50 MWe.From that beginning, heat storage capacity has grown to grid scale. Today heat storage systems coupled to concentrated solar power systems have capacities in excess of a GWh(t) to enable electricity production after sunset at times of higher electricity prices.In contrast, battery storage facilities are limited to the megawatt-hour scale. And potential for each technology is reflected in the long-term cost goals set by the U.S. Department of Energy. The goal for battery storage is to reach $150 per kWh of electricity storage capacity, positiv about the same amount for the installation of power conversion and other required systems to couple to the grid if a battery storage system can reach that goal, it will mora than double electricity costs.By comparison, the DOE goal for thermal energy storag e for use at a concentrated solar power plant is $15 per kWh of heat storage capacity. It is elend likely that there will be a single technology because of differences in the market.A market with large-scale solar has a daily cycle of low- and high-priced electricity whereas a market with large-scale wind sees a multiday cycle of low-price electricity.Of those six classes, two can be considered to be viable in the near term Steam accumulation and liquid sensible heat storage.A steam accumulator is a pressure vessel nearly full of water that is heated to its saturation temperature by steam injection. The heat is stored as high-temperature high-pressure water when steam is needed, valves open and some of th e water is flashed to steam that is sent to a turbine or feed-water heaters generating electricity while the remainder of the water decreases in temperature.The technology is commercialremember, it was deployed at Charlottenburg in 1929and has been deployed at several concentrated solar thermal power stations. It has the advantage of a faster response than any other heat storage system, making it well suited for the kind of quick ramp up needed to accommodate highly variable renewable energy.Sensible heat storage is in some ways similar to a steam accumulator. It involves heating a second fluid (rather than water) with steam, storing that hot fluid at atmospheric pressure, and using that fluid at a later time to provide the heat to produce steam, which is then sent to a turbine. Many concentrated solar power systems store heat in tanks of hot salt or hot oil to enable electricity output from the steam cycle after the sun sets.Westinghouse has begun development of a sensible heat sto rage system for light water reactors. In that system, steam heats a low-pressure heat-transfer oil which then transfers its heat to a heat storage module in which vertical concrete plates serve as the primary heat storage medium rather than the heat-transfer oil. Concrete is used because it is a less expensive heat-storage medium than oil. The hot oil flows through narrow channels between slabs of concrete. To recover the heat, the direction of oil flow is reversed. The hot oil would be used to generate steam that can be used in either the main reactor turbine, a separate power system, or as a partial replacement for steam to feed-water heaters.Liquid Air and Solid RockFour other concepts show a great deal of potential for storing heat from light water reactors, but none are ready for deployment. For instance, cryogenic air energy storage systems hold heat in the fasson of liquefied air that can be stored in facilities similar to those that store liquefied natural gas. The air would be liquefied when electricity prices are low when electricity demand called for it, the liquid air would be compressed, heated using low-temperature heat from a nuclear power plants cooling water, then further heated with steam from the reactor and sent through an air turbine before being exhausted to the atmosphere. The round-trip efficiency for this technology coupled to a LWR is estimated to be over 70 percent.The distinguishing feature of cryogenic air energy storage is that the peak-to-baseload electricity output is higher than for other heat storage systems. A pilot facility coupled to a biofuels power plant is now operating in the United Kingdom, but it will be some time before a system is optimized for nuclear power plants.Another conceptstoring heat in a volume of crushed rockis simple and features the lowest incremental heat storage costs. To charge the system, steam from the reactor heats air via a heat exchanger, and then that hot air circulates through crushed rock, wh ich absorbs the heat and can be raised to arbitrarily high temperatures. In addition, Siemens is developing a variant for use with wind systems that relies on electric resistance heaters to produce the hot air.Instead of using steam to create superheated air, the steam can be used directly to heat pebbles or some other solid material. This packed-bed thermal energy storage system consists of a pressure vessel filled with solid pebbles with a steam valve at the top and water outlet at the bottom. Heat is stored as sensible heat in the pebbles. To charge the system, steam is injected into the peb ble bed. It condenses as the cold pebbles are heated and exits as water from the bottom of the vessel. At the end of the charging cycle all pebbles are hot, and hot water fills the voids at the bottom of the vessel. To discharge the system, water is injected into the bottom of the vessel and steam produced by the hot pebbles travels up and out the top.While this technology is in the early stages of laboratory development, it should in theory have very high round-trip efficiency since it doesnt incur losses in the heat exchanger and because it operates in a counter-current modethe hottest steam sees the hottest pebbles.Perhaps the most long-term method for storing heat involves geological formations. Even so, it is clear that one unique feature of this technology is that it can provide seasonal heat storage at very low cost.Unfortunately, there is no way to insulate rock deep underground, so losses are unavoidable, and the only way to mitigate that is by increasing the storage capacity. In fact, a geothermal heat storage system would have to have a heat capacity greater than 100 megawatt-years in order to retain enough heat over a seasonal timescale.Adding OnWhen coupled to a heat storage system, a light-water reactor would be able to operate at full poweras it was designedwhile meeting the needs of an electricity market driven by solar and wind power variability. At times of low electricity prices some steam would be di verted from the reactor to heat storage but the main steam turbine would remain on line at part load to allow rapid return to full power when needed. At times of high prices, all steam from the reactor is sent to the turbine and heat from storage (usually in the form of steam) would be sent back to the turbine hall to either the turbine or the feed-water heaters in the steam system.Many existing nuclear power plants already have 5 to 10 percent excess capacity in their turbines and could accommodate a modest amount of additional steam from heat storage. New power plants, on the other hand, could be designed with heat storage in mind. Such plants could be built to enable output swings from 30 to 130 percent of base-load capacity using existing technologies. Adding a second turbine for peak electricity production would be particularly attractive at multi-unit nuclear stations because a relatively large turbine could be built to minimize capital costs.It may also make sense to add an a uxiliary steam boiler fueled by natural gas or biofuels to provide peak steam capability at times when heat storage is depleted.Such an auxiliary system might not be used for more than 100 hours per year, but it would be fairly inexpensiveestimated costs for such a steam boiler are between $100-300 per kWeand would enable the plant to provide assured generating capacity. The round-trip efficiency of such storage would be low, since the rate of conversion from heat to electricity is 30 to 35 percent in LWRs, but it would still be a profitable way to make use of the miss-match between wind power production and consumer demand.Bridging the GapThe electric power industry has entered a new era as a result of technological and policy changes. The plummeting price of wind and solar power has made the large-scale addition of those sources almost irresistible, while at the same time there is a growing realization that the grid must add as much low-carbon electricity as quickly as possible. But electric utilities are conservative organizations and they have slow reaction timespartly because of a mandate to keep the lights on. They will demand high confidence that any new technologies will work.Those various impulses seem irreconcilable, but heat storage is a technology that can bridge the gap. When coupled with a light-water reactor, an appropriately scaled heat storage system can provide hundreds of megawatts or more of dispatchable, low-carbon electricity. Heat storage can also be add ed incrementally, retrofitted to existing generating assets at a relatively low cost compared to that of a light-water reactor or even a fossil-fuel power plant. As the pilot projects prove their worth, utilities can add heat storage systems to more plants at very low risk.Perhaps most importantly to utility decision makers, heat storage is in many cases a proven technology. The concept behind it is well understood and while heat storage has never been deployed on the scale as suggested here, the difference is only a matter of magnitude.Adapting old-fashioned heat storage to help usher in a modern low-carbon power industry seems a bit counterintuitivelike going back to the future. But given the many contradictory pressures being felt by the industry, the time could be now for this robust idea.Charles W. He also reviewed the key steps ASME has taken in the past year to ensure its future greatness, including the selection of five technologies that will be the focus of forthcoming programs and products and the formation of four new Society task forces to support ASMEs strategic plan.It is a remarkable time in ASME, a time of incredible opportunity in a changing world, Roe said toward the beginning of his address at the Presidents Luncheon, which took place Nov. 14 during the ASME zwischenstaatlich Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition (IMECE). We are witnessing a transformation of our Society as it reshapes itself to meet todays challenges. The changes we see around us affect almost every aspect of our lives.Roe went on to highlight the difference between ordinary transition and the kind of game-changing transformation the Society is experiencing. A transition will draw you a map to an expected destination, but a transformation puts you on a less clear path to a new, exciting destination, Roe said. A transition can lead to major shifts to a new set of opportunities a transformation brings entirely new perspectives and a vision of a unified whole with limitless possibilities. In the end, transition tries to find a way through the chaos transformation brings order to chaos. At the luncheon, ASME President Keith Roe discussed the So cietys new technology-focused strategy for the future that is intended to establish ASME as the go-to organization for critical mechanical engineering technologies.Roe laid out some of the key activities the Society has undertaken in recent months to pave the way for this ground-breaking transformation, beginning with the Board of Governors decision more than a year ago to approve a new technology-focused strategy for the future that is intended to establish ASME as the go-to organization - or global technology hub, as Roe called it - for critical mechanical engineering technologies. The fundament of the new strategy, which Roe said was intended to take ASME from good to great, was the selection of five technologies the Society would focus on when developing its portfolio of programs and products in the future. The five chosen technologies - manufacturing, clean energy, bioengineering, pressure technology and robotics - were approved by the Board of Governors in June after being identified by ASME staff and the newly formed Technology Advisory Panel from an original list of more than 2,000 individual technologies. In addition to the five focus technologies, ASME identified eight enabling technologies that it considered highly important to innovation and the expansion of the Society the Internet of Things, big data analytics, sustainability, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, materials, nanotechnology and design engineering. ASME Immediate Past President Julio C. Guerrero provided opening remarks and introduced ASME President Keith Roe at the Presidents Luncheon.Roe also discussed the launching of four new Presidential and Sector Management Committee task forces that were formed to support the Societys new strategy the Task Force on Group Engagement and Alignment, chaired by Rick Marboe, vice president of the Technical Events and Content Sector the Task Force for Increasing Industry Leadership Engagement in ASME, chaired by Stacey Swisher Harnetty, fo rmer Board of Governors member the Task Force for Increasing Engagement of Student, Early Career and Digital Mechanical Engineers in ASME, chaired by ASME Past President Terry Shoup and the Task Force on Strategy and Planning, chaired by John Goossen, Board of Governors member.Toward the conclusion of his speech, Roe compared the transformational moment the Society is currently experiencing with a similar occasion more than a century ago when Frederick Winslow Taylor and other leaders of the Progressive Era introduced scientific management principles into manufacturing and business in an effort to improve industrial efficiency. Taylor, who served as president of the Society in 1906-1907, also brought change to ASME by encouraging the organization to become more expansive and accepting of new technologies and change within the engineering profession.Sound familiar? United States Military Engineering United States Military Engineering Having tossed together a brief history of the Seabees and the Army Corps of Engineers, we thought that we could expand that a bit, and briefly cover Military Engineering in general, then split out to the branches of service. We went about it backward; doing individual branches first, then the general overview. Military Engineering is pretty much any engineering activity undertaken, regardless of component or service, where the intent/goal/plan is to shape the physical operating environment in support of maneuvers of the force as a whole â" rephrased, itâs the practice of designing and building military works and maintaining lines of military transport and communications. The heritage of military engineering reaches back to the earliest beginnings of organized armies - on the battlefields of ancient Mesopotamia, India, Egypt, Persia, Greece, and Rome, skilled military engineers laid the groundwork for the role of their modern descendants. The Ancient Romans are considered to perhaps be the first civilization to have a dedicated force of military engineering specialists. Military engineering is the oldest of the engineering skills and was the precursor of the profession of civil engineering. Three Main Tasks of Military Engineering Combat engineering - engineering on the battlefield.Strategic support - providing service in communication zones such as the construction of airfields and the improvement and upgrade of ports, roads, and railways communication.Ancillary support - provision and distribution of maps as well as the disposal of unexploded warheads. The prevalence of military engineering in the United States dates back to the American Revolutionary War when engineers would carry out tasks in the Army. During the war, engineers would map terrain to and build fortifications to protect troops from opposing forces. These first military engineers became the Army Corps of Engineers. Military engineers are responsible for protecting the troops either by using fortifications or by designing new technology and weaponry. Military engineers construct and repair bases, airfields, roads, bridges, and hospitals as well as clearing routes, harbors, and ports. Military engineers constructed airfields for heavy bombers, launch facilities for intercontinental ballistic missiles, and radar installations to increase communication. They also built many of the facilities for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Originally in the United Statesâ history of warfare, the Army claimed engineers exclusively, but as the Armed Forces branches expanded to the sea and sky, the need for military engineering in all branches increased. Accordingly, as each branch of the United States military expanded, technology was invented or adapted to fit their respective needs. Offices of Military Engineering The United States Air Forceâs military engineering needs are provided by several offices: Air Force Civil Engineer Support AgencyRapid Engineer Deployable Heavy Operational Repair Squadron Engineers (RED HORSE): These squadrons are the United States Air Forces heavy-construction units. Their capabilities are similar to those of the U.S. Navy Seabees and U.S. Army heavy-construction organizations. There is even an Airborne RED HORSE.Prime Base Engineer Emergency Force (Prime BEEF): As the name states, this is a rapidly deployable, specialized civil engineer unit of the United States Air Force. The United States Armyâs military engineering needs are provided by the Army Corps of Engineers.The United States Coast Guardâs military engineering needs are provided by their Engineering and Logistics Directorate.The United States Navyâs military engineering needs are provided by the Construction Battalion Corps (better known as the Seabees) and Civil Engineer Corps (CEC). The CEC is a staff corps of the United States Navy. CEC officers are professional engineers and architects, acquisitions specialists and Seabee Combat Warfare Officers. They are responsible for executing and managing the planning, design, acquisition, construction, operation, and maintenance of the Navys shore facilities. The United States Marinesâ military engineering needs are provided by the Marine Corps Combat Engineer Battalions. A Related Note Out of the experiences of the US Military in WWI, there was concern that the collective knowledge and the cooperation between the public and private sectors that proved vital to combat success would be lost â" a valid concern, considering how the military was demobilized (or âdownsizedâ) after the conclusion of the war. In 1919, Maj. Gen. William M. Black, USA, the Armys Chief of Engineers, appointed a nine-officer board to consider the formation of an association of engineers that would preserve and expand upon connections formed in war and promote the advancement of engineering and its related professions. Out of this formed The Society of American Military Engineers (SAME), the premier professional military engineering association in the United States, which unites architecture, engineering, construction (A/E/C), facility management and environmental entities and individuals in the public and private sectors to prepare for- and overcome- natural and manmade disasters, and to improve security at home and abroad.

I am addicted to the television show, The Biggest Loser. I love watching the contestants compete for the title of âBiggest Loserâ and accomplish their dreams of healthier, thinner bodies. The âbeforeâ and âafterâ shots are just incredible!But what I really love about the show is that it doesnât sugar coat the journey. You watch people break down, fall over and truly battle with themselves along the path to regaining control of their lives. It doesnât happen overnight. As trainer Dolvett Quince would say, it takes a lot of âhard work and determination.â Each season a new theme is chosen for the show. The themes range from âbattle of the agesâ to tackling childhood obesity.I bring this up because as I was looking at some data from Ladders, I was reminded of Season 13 â" the season of no excuses.In a recent survey we found that 70 percent of those polled said that the job s earch was their top priority. However, as my colleague Thomas Murphy discussed in his article, job seeker activity has taken a serious hit since March Madness NCAA basketball tournaments have descended upon us. In fact, job seeker searches fell almost 30 percent during game-time in comparison to historical usage data.Not surprisingly, men were 10 percent less active in their job search than women. In addition, we found that those making less than $100K were 5 percent less active than their more seasoned colleagues.While I may not be a sports fanatic, Iâve grown up in a household of them and (kind of) understand the obsession. However, March Madness is no excuse for letting your job search slide.The job search is a full-time job and you need to treat it as such. If youâre going to block off time to watch the basketball games â" or dedicate time to anything else thatâs really important or interesting to you â" make sure you also pencil in time to work on your job-search activi ties.Donât underestimate the power of your smartphone or tablet, especially when youâre trying to balance your job search with other priorities. With all the advances in technology, itâs even easier to keep your search going while on the go. Whether youâre emailing with a recruiter, putting in a little FaceTime with a valuable networking contact, or searching for relevant jobs, you can remain a productive job seeker and an avid college basketball fan.

How to Nail Your Creative Job Interview How to Nail Your Creative Job Interview Do you have a big creative job interview coming up? Whether it's an in-person meeting or video interview, don't stress. Be prepared. Nail everything from the first impression to the final question with these five job interview tips. For most creative professionals, interviewing can be stressful. Organizations and hiring managers have unique ways of evaluating candidates, and it can be difficult to know what you're getting yourself into and how to prepare for each one. For example, should you wear a suit if you know the position you're interviewing for is at a bona fide jeans-and-hoodie start-up? How about connecting with your interviewers on LinkedIn before the meeting? There are plenty of things to keep in mind before you arrive, so here are five interview tips to think about as you head into that upcoming creative job interview. 1. Do your homework Show up prepared by researching beyond-the-basics information about the position and company. Don't just visit their website and social media pages â" search the company name so you're informed of recent events such as acquisitions or a newly appointed CEO. Also ask people in your network if they have any insight about the organization. Maybe a former classmate used to work for the company and can give you insights. Then, as relevant interview questions come up, strategically share your knowledge about the company. 2. Be aware of your body language Your nonverbal communication matters. Subtle cues, such as eye contact, facial expressions and posture, will affect how others perceive you. Do you tend to bite your nails or fiddle with your pen? If so, be aware so you can avoid distracting behaviors. Make sure you're coming across as confident, secure and capable. Demonstrate these traits by: Smiling genuinely Making eye contact Not fidgeting Sitting up straight (No slouching!) And, of course, offering a firm handshake SEARCH OUR CREATIVE JOB OPENINGS 3. Tell stories in the job interview Don't just tell the interviewer that you're an excellent front-end web developer or copywriter, show him or her by referencing real-life examples of the impact you've made. Ask thoughtful questions This is not the time to inquire about salary. (You don't have the job yet!) Rather, follow the interview questions with some thoughtful questions of your own. Ask the hiring manager to describe an aspect of the job that might surprise you or what the team's process is for collaborating on projects. If you have a chance to meet with someone you'd be working with, ask for their take on company culture or what their biggest challenges are. Such questions help reinforce your interest in the position and the company. 5. Be yourself The key to making a strong first impression is to simply show the real you. Try to avoid rehearsed responses and fluffy jargon. Instead interact in a way that's honest and genuine. Nordstroms Corporate Internship Program Nordstroms Corporate Internship Program I recently did an interview with Maureen Tryon, Northeast Regional Recruiter, from Nordstroms. Maureen shared some excellent tips for students when applying as well as completing an internship. Please see below what Maureen had to say. Penny Loretto: What do you look for in an internship applicant? Maureen Tryon: Nordstroms is currently growing rapidly and continually seeks enthusiastic people who are excited and want to grow with the company. Interns coming into the organization should take the experience seriously. Students who keep up with current trends and seek to learn more about the company, as well as the industry, will be much more likely to be considered for full-time employment at the completion of their internship. Penny: How important is the initial resume and cover letter and what advice do you have for applicants when preparing these documents? Maureen: Nordstromâs actually does their applications online. Students are required to complete an online profile which actually feeds the information from their college resume. A studentâs resume is going to be the first impression the company gets of a student, so itâs very important that past experiences, jobs, etc., are included with full descriptions of each experience thatâs relevant. Cover letters are not required, but students do have the opportunity to attach one. If a student does attach a cover letter, it will be reviewed and will be included in the studentâs record. Nordstroms receives approximately 900 internship applicants each year. Penny: In your opinion what can make or break an interview? Maureen: Our interview process, the studentâs profile, completion of the online assessment, all have a tremendous bearing on whether a student will be hired or not. We receive thousands of applications each year, and we use these steps to weed out applicants. A phone interview is the next step once applicants have been selected. From there, students may go on to a person-to-person interview or a panel where they will be asked a series of questions. We look for those applicants who shine and are self-motivated leaders who possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills that will help to build positive customer relationships for the company. Penny: What makes for a successful intern? Maureen: For me its always going to be interns who are eager, show initiative, possess good sales skills and people who are open to learning, set goals, competitive, comfortable putting themselves out there and continually are involved in networking, exploring opportunities, and looking out see whatâs going to be available to them. Penny: What deadly mistakes have you seen interns make during their internship experience? Maureen: The biggest mistakes I see is when our interns take an opportunity for 9 weeks, and they dont view the internship as the beginning of a career, They dont make any personal and professional connections, and they basically just go through the motions and view the experience as just a part-time summer job. Penny: How important do you perceive the relationship between the employer and the university for an internship to be successful? Maureen: We view our university partners as crucial to the overall success of our program. When working closely with campuses and college career centers, we are ensured of getting quality students to fill our internship slots. We value our university partners, and by closely working together we can offer students learning experiences that will prepare them well for the real world. Penny: Any advice on what interns can do to better their chances of getting hired if a full-time position comes available within the organization? Maureen: As students go through the internship program, they will want to focus on learning as much as they can. How well a student performs on the job is really the first part of any interview. To get hired as a full-time employee with the organization, students must use this internship opportunity as a chance perform to the highest of their ability. Asking questions, networking, and keeping in touch once the internship is over are definite things a student wants to do if they are hoping to be considered for a future full-time job opening. Juniors may work hard to be accepted the following year as an intern, but upcoming seniors will most likely be seeking full-time employment after graduating from college. Penny: What may preclude a student from getting hired? Maureen: We get so many applications that if an intern doesnât stand out, they may get lost in the shuffle. We can usually tell from the interview and paperwork how a student will perform the job. We seek students who are prepared, professional, goal driven and self-motivated. Maureenâs Final Tips: Our internships have been a great program for us. We enjoy finding interested students who excel in their performance and see Nordstromâs as home. Our internship program runs June through August, and each year our successful interns make up a large number of our new hires.
